Abstract: »Galdós does not describe the first sexual encounter between Tristana and don Lope, leaving what Wolfgang Iser calls a gap in the text that the reader must fill by imagining the omitted details. According to the laws in effect in Spain from 1870-1932, don Lope committed a sexual crime when he seduced Galdós's eponymous protagonist. This essay examines how three adaptations of the novel depict the seduction scene. Each of the adapters provide a different scenario, but all treat Lope's behavior as a form of sexual abuse. In his 1970 film version, Luis Buñuel presents the seduction as an eroticized quasi-incestuous form of sexual perversion. Eduardo Galán's 2017 theater work places the crime of estupro within the larger context of don Lope's cohesive control of Tristana. In 2000, illustrator Alberto Hernández visualizes the scene as a rape in the graphic novel 1892, written by Antonio Becerra Bolaños.« (Source: Article)
